How should I lose weight? (Tell me exactly what to do Josh!)
Did you know that the word Diet comes from the Greek word Diaita, which means Way of Life?
For many people, the word Diet is associated with periods of restriction, sometimes extreme, followed by periods of reckless abandon, during which the loathing is deep.
This is not a Way of Life!
Ideally, we would find a way of eating (and exercising) which is more of a long term approach, something you can see yourself doing for a period of Years, rather than Weeks or Months.
This “Diet” would allow you to lose belly fat naturally, while giving you high levels of energy in your day-to-day life. You would also see great results in the gym, as your strength and endurance would skyrocket. (I’ve seen incredible gains of 30-40% in the couple of months since I started, and my stomach has gotten flatter despite eating big meals 5-6x per day)
Enter the Whole Foods, Plant Based diet. Have you ever seen an overweight vegan? I didn’t think so. (Actually they do exist, in cases where the main foods are white bread and sugar)
Before I give you the meal plan, one rule to remember is the 80/20 rule. This means 80 percent of what you eat should be whole foods, and 20 percent can be what the late great Alen Carr calls “Junk”.
Everyone should include junk food up to 20 percent of the time, which junk you pick is up to you!
Junk includes meat, packaged foods, and refined carbohydrates. Any diet which completely eliminates junk and/or severely restricts calories may get you short term results but is unlikely to work for the long term, and may backfire when you regain the weight.
So what are some examples of Junk Food?
For me, putting rice milk and dried fruits in my oatmeal qualifies as junk, the same goes for the protein powder I take for muscle building. These are the processed foods which I rely on to get me through the day, even though they technically qualify as “junk food” according to our definition.
For you, it might be that steak on a Friday night, or healthy home-baked cookies with the kids. Homemade popcorn is also one of my favorites. You get to pick your junk! But the closer it is to real whole food, the better.
Here is the meal plan.
