The Benefits of Personal Training
Here’s how Personal Training can get you better results and speed up recovery from injuries:
If you enjoy working out in a group class setting such as CrossFit, or by yourself at a gym, at times you may find yourself plateauing, or even regressing due to injuries.
Scenario A: Peter
Peter is a hardgainer, meaning it is difficult for him to gain muscle mass. Initially he had great gains doing CrossFit, but now he feels stuck lifting the same weights, and his body composition no longer improves.
He sits down for a meeting with his coach and the coach lays out a plan of action. They review Peter’s diet, and find that Pete rushes off to work every morning, and doesn’t get to breakfast until about 10:30.
Coach recommends adding a fruit bar with Greek Yogurt first thing in the morning. It’s fast and easy, and it gives Peter a strong dose of healthy protein, fats, and carbohydrates which will go directly to building lean tissue and help balance Pete’s energy levels.
The coach also recommends an accessory program of exercises to do before or after workouts. He has Peter doing a compound lift followed by hypertrophy work 2 times per week for both upper and lower body.
For upper body Pete will do push presses followed by dips and dumbbell rows followed by chin ups.
He sets Peter up with a personal training session to go over the correct form on the exercises. The program Pete will do on his own before or after group classes, so no need for extra trips to the gym.
A month later they meet again and after doing a body comp scan are delighted to find that Pete has gained a solid kilogram of lean muscle mass. Pete’s friends have also noticed the change and commented on it. Life feels good all around!
Scenario B: Melinda
Melinda is a desk jockey and a hard charger. Her mind-numbing job has her sitting in meeting for hours on end, and working out is her therapy. She goes hard in the gym and it keeps her sane.
Unfortunately she has this nagging shoulder pain that is just pissing her off. 2 months ago she got her first muscle up, but she hasn’t been back to it since, as the fire in the right shoulder is too much to bear.
She sees her coach and he discovers that she is missing internal rotation at the shoulder. This is why she gets the burning pain at the bottom of the dip.
They schedule a personal training session where he teaches her specific stretching and strengthening exercises. Two weeks later she is back on top of the rings and pain free!
Who knew a single hour of personal training could have such an impact!
Conclusions: Everybody is not the same and every person has individual goals. Some want to lose weight, some want to gain. Different people want to improve at different things.
Going to the gym is nice, and CrossFit classes are even better, but regardless of your goal, individual coaching will get you there faster.
Some people will get their best results by working with a personal trainer three times per week. Others once a month or even less frequently.
